In my experience, a portage, while satisfying and rewarding, is often a challenging and physically grueling exercise.  This is a solid reason why canoeists, like backpackers, are obsessive in their attempts to reduce their gear to the lightest load possible.  Now imagine that your canoe could assist you and that a fishy recruit would show the way. This system of portage should surely be patented!
