We all make mistakes.  This piece makes me think of blameworthiness, culpability, disgrace, dishonor, penitence, regret, responsibility, self‑condemnation and shame.  I wasn't sure whether this figure has made a very serious mistake, and is therefore reacting appropriately, or maybe he has made only a minor indiscretion and is overreacting.   Either way, the important concept for us to note is that he is willing to accept responsibility for his actions.
